What is a PVC NFC Token?
Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) Near Field Communication (NFC) tokens are rigid NFC tags made from laminated PVC plastic. These NFC tags contain a copper antenna, an embedded NFC chip, and can include optional features such as ferrite backing for use on metal, adhesive layers, mounting holes or slots, and clear epoxy domes. White and black PVC NFC tokens are typically stocked, while other colors, such as red, blue, green, and yellow, are available by special order with higher minimum order quantities (MOQs) and longer lead times. Compared to heavy duty NFC tokens, PVC NFC tokens are less robust and not suitable for prolonged water exposure or high-impact conditions.
PVC NFC tokens are used to mark physical items and locations in applications that require a durable, semi-permanent NFC tag. They are commonly used by security teams for patrol checkpoints, churches for donation tracking, and operations teams for asset control. These NFC tokens act as proxies for objects, locations, containers, and other physical interaction points.
How to Choose a PVC NFC Token
- Mounting Surface: Select ferrite-backed tokens for metal or electronic surfaces. Use sticky NFC tokens with 3M adhesive for general mounting. Mechanical attachment is possible using center holes or side slots for strap attachment.
- Environment: PVC NFC tokens have an IP67 waterproof rating for the core body, but optional ferrite or adhesive layers may reduce water resistance and are not permanently sealed.
- Shape and Size: Standard size is 30 mm with a 3 mm center hole. Other sizes range from 15 mm to 100 mm. Larger NFC tokens allow better read range; smaller NFC tokens have reduced antenna performance.
- Availability: Inventory includes blank white and black NFC tokens with 1 to 2 day shipping. Printed and custom products have a 3-week lead time. Epoxy dome options require longer due to the curing time.
- NFC Chip Type: Most NFC tokens use NTAG213. NTAG215 and NTAG216 are available in smaller volumes. Other NFC chip types can be custom-ordered.
Customizing a PVC NFC Token
- Printing: White PVC supports full-color CMYK printing with glossy or matte finishes; colored PVC supports 1 to 2 Pantone Matching System (PMS) colors via silkscreen. Variable printing is supported for IDs, text, and QR codes. Printed products include website pricing and allow self-checkout with basic customization options. Custom products require a quote and support a broader range of effects, including foil backgrounds and reflective surfaces.
- Adhesive: Default is 3M 467. Other adhesives, including 3M 8448A, 300 LSE, and VHB, are available for special surfaces or performance needs. Alternatives to adhesive include velcro and magnetic backing.
- Encoding: GoToTags can encode NFC tokens during production. Customers can also encode NFC tags using the GoToTags Desktop App.
Recommendations
- Most customers use white PVC for full-color printing; edges remain white even with full-bleed artwork.
- Use colored PVC only when edge color is required and artwork uses 1 to 2 solid colors.
- Do not use PVC NFC tokens for submersion or regular exposure to cleaning agents.
- Choose heavy duty NFC tokens for long-term outdoor, high-impact, or chemically exposed applications.
